Friday Update - Greg Felt
The Arkansas River is up a bit from rain on the upper end. Fortunately, this did not cause any significant visibility issues, just a small increase in flow. With cooler weather and a chance of showers for the next seven days, we may see similar inflows throughout the river corridor. An afternoon thunderstorm flashed on the lower river this afternoon, mucking things up below Lone Pine. I'm sure it will clear out by morning. In any event, we will try to stay current on water quality/quantity here but feel free to call at 719-539-4223 if you need an update.

While each day has its own nuances, typically a product of the relative amounts of sun and cloud and the ambient air temperature, the overall pattern of fish and bug behavior has remained consistent. Brown trout can be found out in the edgewater and seamlines through much of the day, moving into deeper or more riffly water in the mid-afternoons. Throughout the day, attractor dries and caddis will bring them to the surface. However, during the mid-afternoon lull, a mayfly emerger fished behind a beadhead nymph will take fish more consistently. We are not seeing a lot of mayflies or stoneflies in the air now, though a mid-afternoon seine will turn up drifting baetis nymphs. Caddis seem to be the most consistent bug right now and many patterns will work. If you are getting looks but no takes, drop it down a size.

The fishing now is good to excellent. The fish are not in the panic for calories that they were a month ago. And they will take longer to look over a fly before biting. But they seem very willing to eat both dries and nymphs throughout the day. They are in good shape for this point in the summer and the colors are vibrant.

The flows are expected to remain at 700 cfs through August 15th, at which point they will be stepped down to native flow (probably around 400 cfs). The exception to this is a plan to lower the flows dramatically on the upper river Monday morning for a body recovery several miles above Buena Vista. The plan will see a "divot" of low water moving through the river corridor at approximately the following times/places: Hayden Meadows 5:00 am to 12:00 noon; Granite Gorge 7:00 am to 1:00 pm; Browns Canyon 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm; Big Bend 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm; Wellsville 5:00 pm to 1:00 am; and Texas Creek 2:00 am to 9:00 am. As the divot will pass through most of Bighorn Sheep Canyon during the night, we anticipate the impact to the fishing to be minimal.

The weather forecast for the week ahead calls for a 30% chance of afternoon showers each day. Temperatures are projected to decline through the weekend and into next week.
